Dunnes Stores will roll out a French Wine Sale this September. At a recent press tasting of the wines quite a few stood out as being excellent. This is not surprising as many of these wines are a distinct move up on the quality ladder for this very Irish supermarket.
There are too many to mention here but I have listed a few that caught the eye. Some of the prices are on the high side but in each case they are also good value.
Pascal Jolivet Sancerre, Loire €30.00 This is top class Sauvignon Blanc allied to a superb limestone terroir. The result a great depth of rich, ripe and very vibrant fruit touched with a distinct flinted edge.
Lorgeril 1620 Malbec, Pays d’Oc €12.00 Excllent fruit with a smooth and long finish. Very Good Value.
Chateau Galochet, Bordeaux €10.00 Lovely structure here. All Merlot. Will work very well with some burnt food. One for the BBQ!
Chateau Bellevue la Foret, Fronton €12.00 My pick of the bunch for value, quality and interest. It’s mostly the Negrette grape blended with Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon and owned by an Irish man. Really very fine and rich fruit with a lovely edge that bites back into the middle palate. The structure here is excellent. Super value.
Laurent Miguel Bardou, Saint Chinian €20.00 I like everything that Laurent Miguel makes. I love this Saint Chinian! Dark, brooding, rich and subtle.
Chateau Bechereau Montagne St Emilion €16.50 All good juice here with a distinctly soft style and a fabulous balance to its structure. Good winemaking.
Finally, Lanson Black Label Champagne has made a welcome return to Dunnes Stores. Its a snip at €40.00!
