SuperValu has a French Wine Fair running right now. It has some excellent wines and fabulous value. Over 110 Wines with a dozen special Guest Wines!
The WinePod dropped in to interview a few of the producers who came to town to launch the Fair. They have really great stories to tell!
Kevin O’Callaghan, SuperValu Wine Buyer, tells us why these Fairs are important and what makes this one stand out from the crowd.
Cecille Jacqaurt introduces us to the wonderful Guy Saget wines from the Loire valley. They produce from 40 different appellations!! Look out for both the la Petite Perriere and the Coteaux du Giennois Alchimie Sauvignon Blanc wines. Then treat yourself to the Guy Saget Sancerre (my fave) and the Guy Saget Pouilly Fume wines (both at €15.00 down from €19.99). Excellent.
Then Pierre Jung guides us through the Dourthe wines from Bordeaux. Dourthe is one of my all time favourite groups from Bordeaux. They own some of the finest properties, make fabulous wine and offer super value for money. Chateau Pey da la Tour (€9.99) is a fine intro. Follow this with Ch. Sissan – you could age this yourself it has such an elegant structure. Lovely styling. My absolute favourite from Dourthe in this sale is the fantastic Ch. la Garde 2010 Pessac Leognan – real value at €20.00 (tuck it away for Christmas).
After Dourthe we continued a Bordeaux theme with a fabulous presentation from Elaine de Cheppa representing her family from St Emilion. I was very impressed by both the entry level Chateau Lacombe-Cadiot Bordeaux Superieur (Medoc €13.00) and their Chateau Tour Baladoz St Emilion Grand Cru (€25.00 down from €45.99). The latter is from a small 9hectare plot on the best of the St Emilion limestone.
Then we moved along to Burgundy with the wonderful Arnauld Goichot from the Andre Goichot label. Followers of SuperValu will be very familiar with the Goichot label. It has been a mark of quality on their shelves for some time now. Arnauld brought us through the many appellations that the Goichot family brings to us – Chablis to Macon Lugny; the impressive Montagny les Resses and brilliant Pouilly Fuisse whites to the Beaujolais cru wines, Fleurie and Moulin a Vent, to their Mercurey red. It really is an education into Burgundy!
Almost as if to prove a point that this was a great sale of French Wines we were then introduced to Samuel Henri who told us all about his Domaine St Patrice Chateauneuf du Pape (€30.00 down from €49.99). There is no doubt that the Irish love their Chateauneuf’s, so it was super to see such value. Also in the Sale from Samuel are the Hommage Vinsobres €10.00 and the Remy Ferbras Vacqueras €12.00 and Gigondas €15.00 along with the Cuvee Caroline Rose from Provence at €10.00
Finally, Laura Peterson introduced us to the delights of a Cremant from Chablis ( the only Cremant made in Chablis!) from the brilliant Simmonet-Febvre, the l’Ami Crustace Pinot Blanc from Alsace and the perennial quality from the Louis Latour Meursault from Burgundy.
There are many other wines in this SuperValu French Wine Fair. This is just a sample based on the suppliers that we had time to bring along to the WinePod! Well done SuperValu. A great selection.
