Piper Heidsieck Champagne is one of the greatest brands in the world. It is also one of the most refined drinks available. It is certainly one of the most distinctive.

Over the years the Piper brand has been synonymous with the movies –  its first ‘appearance’ was in Laurel and Hardy’s ‘Sons of the Desert’ a long way back in 1933. Today Piper Heidsieck is the official Champagne to both Cannes and the Oscars and continues to appear in a great many movies.

The official Piper Heidsieck site introduces their wine maker Emilien Boutillat as, ‘… this son of a Champagne winegrower has excellent command of all aspects of the viticulture and winemaking, and truly excels in the art of tasting and blending.’ Praise indeed!

The WinePod caught up with Emilien recently and explored the intertwined worlds of Champagne, Piper Heidsieck and, of course, Emilien Boutillat himself. We tasted the Rose Sauvage– blood red, fabulous fresh fruits; the latest Black Label Vintage 2012– vibrant minerality; Red label Cuvee Brut – distinctively smooth; the two new Essentiel labels Blanc de Blancs and Extra Brut – firm, delicious and fabulous food wines.
