France seems to have a wine Sale on in most of our multiples these days. That’s good as these Sales are not like their counterparts in say, shoes or clothing where product needs to make way for new seasons or fashions. Indeed, wine sales are not dumping exercises! Nope, they are more celebratory where the respective wine buyers can indulge themselves. Well, that may be overstating it – just a bit …
Right now LIDL has an interesting French Wine Sale on. At a recent press tasting the following impressed:
Wally Touraine Loire €9.99 Odd name but at least its memorable! This has an abundance of crisp, fresh, crunchy fruit. Lovely ripe style of Sauvignon Blanc with a really well defined but unobtrusive structure.
Expression de Saint Mont €8.99 Tremendous VFM ( Value for Money!) AOC Saint Mont in the SW is a fabulous place to look for less well know native French grapes. Their white wines use Gros Manseng, Arrufiacand and Petit Courbu. This wine is an excellent example of what the region has to offer.
Chateau Roque le Mayne Castillon, Cotes de Bordeaux €14.99. Tremendous pour (ie looks great as it enters the glass!) with a rich ruby. excellent structure and rich, at times chewy, fruit. Great food wine.
Les Pierres Languedoc-Rousillon, Cabardés €9.99 This is one of my favourite appellations in France. Why? Because it uses both Rhone grapes AND Bordeaux grapes in its blends! This is all round solid stuff with a strawberry influence and really fine length.
and a few others …
Les Moulines Collection d’Altitude Saint Chinian €11.99
l’Enclos des Cayrolles, Cotes du Rhone €8.99
Rasteau Dame de Clochevigne, Rhone €9.99
This is a fun Sale and a good few of these wines will feature on the Lidl shelves for good now. Good news all round.
