SuperValu Spanish Wine Sale: On Now!

Once a year SuperValu holds an excellent sale of Spanish wines. This years event began yesterday (11th Feb) and runs until March the 3rd.

Those of you who follow our Kevin Ecock’s WinePod podcast will have heard HERE all about the brilliant wines of Martin Codax in Galicia. Well, the Martin Codax Albarino from Rias Baixas features in this Sale at the very reasonable €15.00.

Very good value and high quality are the hallmarks of this Sale.

This is not surprising as Kevin O’Callaghan, SuperValu wine buyer, tells us that red wine from Spain is the biggest selling category across the entire SuperValu network. Impressive.

A few left of field offerings worth looking at include the very interesting Vinos del Vero Gewurztraminer (€10.00) by Gonzalez Byass from Somontano in the north of Spain and the half bottle of dessert wine, Floralis Moscatel Oro by Torres €12.00. This latter is in the ‘Special Guests‘ section and is joined by Wine of the Month, Abellio Albarino at only €10.00.

As Ireland continues its unashamed love affair with the wines of Rioja it is only fitting that they feature well. With each of Marques de Riscal, Pagos de Labarca (fabulous!), Cune, Marques de Caceres and Campo Viejo all making an appearance the prize must go to the magnum (1.5l) of Marques de Riscal at €30.00. That’s a saving of almost €10.00!

The Big Boy

A great feature are the three Case Deals. Both Torres Vina Sol and Torres Sangre de Toro are €45.00 for a case of six (only €7.50 a bottle!) while the 6bt Gold Medal Wooden Case is only €40.00 (wines are: no idea yet! waiting for the detail…..)

It gets better! Three of Torres’ top wines, which normally retail at or near €30.00, are now only €20.00. This is a steal and a superb opportunity to see what the magic is all about from one of the world’s top wine making family’s.

Salmos from Priorat (Carinena, Garnacha Tinta, Syrah), Fransola (Sauvignon Blanc) from Penedes ( and the exquisite Purgatori (Carinena, Garnacha Tinta, Syrah) from Costers del Segre.

There’s loads more in the Sale. The Ermita (€15.00) wines are always a good buy as is the Segura Viudas Cava (€20.00). Give the Bobal from Valencia a try (€10.00). It has the Born to Be Wild label. Now, there’s a thought for Valentines weekend!

Note of Caution: Not all stores carry each of these offers. I’ve already fallen foul of this!! The Torres cases offers are not, and will not be, available in my local SuperValu … and the next store is well outside my 5K zone …. not good. Not good at all ….
