At times I wax lyrical. This SuperValu Italian Wine Sale has me lyrical in all the right places. It really is very good. Why? Because SuperValu has embarked on a process where they are reducing the shelf price of some their top end wines by 33% when they have a Sale on. That’s a Big whack when the beginning number is a Big one!
So, what’s this Sale all about? An Italian Sale that sparks with energy? Absolutely. Kevin O’Callaghan, SuperValu Wine Buyer, tells us that, “While we will have up to 80 wines as part of the Italian Wine Event, the guest wines we will showcase give our shoppers a chance to expand on their repertoire of wine, showing them the breadth of choice available with the Italian offering and the unique wines produced there. These guest wines really do represent an excitement to try new wines and we really encourage shoppers to use this event to explore new tastes and varieties within the range.”
Here’s the Guest Wines line up.

How long is it since you tried an Asti Spumante? Have you ever? It’s probably the best sparkler for a sun drenched patio! Serve very well chilled as it’s quite sweet. The explosion of bright Muscat fruits onto the palate is a WOWZIE.
ACQUESI Asti Spumante €12.00 back from €17.99

One of these Guests that really impresses is the Altygo from Piemonte. The Alter Ego label is a play on the blend of old and new ideas that the winemakers at San Sylvestro have worked with here. They even express it on the impressive label. This is made with the brilliant Dolcetto grape – one of my all time faves. Soft and delicious. Superb value €12.00 from €17.99
This is a genuine Sale that allows you to explore the grapes of Italy, a country blessed with a collection of the most exciting in the world. The wines vary from the super traditional to the more modern (generally means more fruit and less structure). In addition, this is a Sale where many of the Guest Wines are being brought to us at prices not found anywhere in the world!

Have a look at the Banfi wines. They are considered among the best ever produced out of Montalcino. The Banfi Rosso di Montalcino here (€18.00 from €26.00 ) is described as , ‘ ..a complex wine characterized by a great varietal expression. On the nose, aromas of blackberries and raspberry meet coffee and tobacco hints. In the mouth the structure is wide, harmonious and well balanced by the typical acidity of the vintage. Excellent and persistent finish on the palate’. All true!

White grapes from Italy have often been overlooked in favour of their more robust red siblings. No longer. I really do urge you all to try grapes such as the Greco, Verdicchio, Garganega, Cortese and others. Distinctive and always satisfying. SuperValu generously brings us a Vermentino here from our great friend Piergiorgio Castellani in Tuscany. (Listen back HERE to our podcast episode recorded at Pergiorgio’s vineyards back in 2019.)
Cortezza Vermentino (€10.00 back from €15.00) This is a wine from coastal vines where light sea breezes allow the grapes to develop over a long growing season. Often likened to Riesling it has refreshing acidity, bright mineral and herbal notes and for me an absolutely superb styling. Lovely wine.
The SuperValu Italian Wine Sale has up to 80 wines on sale and runs nationwide from May 19th to the 8th of June. Let’s make the Guests Welcome!
