SuperValu had a pre sale tasting recently for its current Sale of Spanish Wines. It was a fine tasting for a great selection of wines that offer fabulous value!

A point to Note is that all through this Sale there is an additional ‘Buy any 6 Bottles and Save an additional €10.00’. Not bad. Not bad at all …

Here’s a few that caught my eye – rest assured there are many more.

Vinas del Vero Gewurztraminer DO Somontano €16.99 €12.00 Here’s a region of origin that we don’t see enough of – it’s tucked up against the Pyrenees in the north centre of Spain. Mind you, we don’t see enough Gewurtztraminer either! This is fruit filled, crisp and dry with hint of lychee and rose water. Simply delicious.

Two wines from the great Torres stable are included as Icon Premium offerings both have been reduced from €30.00 to €20.00. They are the brilliant Salmos from Priorat and the fabulously named Purgatori from Costers del Segre. These are brilliant prices. Get the wine club together folks!

Mind you Torres favourites Sangre de Toro and Vina Sol are pared back to €8.00 – buy 3 of each and they come in at only €6.33 a bottle.

Martin Codax Albariño Rias Baixas €17.99 €12.00 Albariño is one of he great white grapes from Spain. Classic spiced minerality and bright fresh fruit. In addition the sale has two further Albariño wines – the Paco & Lola €12.00 and the Abellio at an amazing €10.00.

If you want to look at other white grapes from Spain I strongly recommend both the Godello and Verdejo offerings!

The case offering of 6 bottles from la Miranda Secastilla Garnacha at €40 is quite simply a steal – drinks well and makes a Great Gift!

Rioja, of course, gets a good look in with Marques de Caceres Crianza €16.49 €13.00 and the Marques de Caceres Gran Reserva €30.00 to €20.00. Really excellent value are the Finca Labarca Rioja wines Reserva €15.99 to €10 and the Crianza €10.00 to €8.00 Gran Reserva €19.99 to €15.00 while the very brilliant Pagos de Labarca is €23.99 to €20.00

Other favourites of mine include Salo Crianza. Brilliant value, honest blend of Grenache, Tempranillo, Syrah and Carinena. I also rate the Casa l’Ermita range from down in Jumilla where Monastrell rules!

Loads more. Not enough time here. DONT FORGET SHERRY or CAVA!! There’s no wrong time of the year. They are each among the BEST value wine styles in the world.
